As the publishing industry wobbles and Kindle sales jump, book romanticists cry themselves to sleep. But really, what are we shedding tears over?
We’re losing the throwaway paperback.
The airport paperback.
The beachside paperback. We’re losing the dredge of the publishing world: disposable books. The book printed without consideration of form or sustainability or longevity.
Of the books we do print — the books we make — they need rigor. They need to be books where the object is embraced as a canvas by designer, publisher and writer. This is the only way these books as physical objects will carry any meaning moving forward.
A really interesting article on the future of books, in light of digital publishing.
JDS architects: experiencing the void
architecture turned into enjoyment and participation.
instead of contemplating the void of the guggenheim museum’s central space, JDS architects have proposed an experience which sees a trampoline net spiraling down the institution’s rotunda. this idea plays on frank lloyd wright’s original scenography for the guggenheim in which he envisioned patrons visiting the exhibition from the top, downwards.

First, care.
Before you sweat the logistics of focus: first, care. Care intensely.
Own your distractions, resist fiddly half-measures, and never for a minute allow yourself to believe that productivity systems, space pens, or a writing app that plays new age music while you stare at a blank page in full-screen mode can ever teach you anything about how to care.
So, first, care. Then, as you’ll happily and unavoidably discover, all that “focus” business has a peculiar way of taking care of itself.
This is really good advice. When I think back, all the times that I had a hard time focusing (doing research, graduate school) were times that I didn’t care much. I just wanted it to be over with. And the times that I have been intensely focused are the times that I really cared about the final product.
This also says something for how companies should motivate their employees.
